News from Board Member Deborah Hay
Dream Harps
What do you give a 90 year old for their birthday? I spotted an ad for a harp-making workshop at Albany recently, and thought it would be ideal for my father to make one for himself.
Together with my father and two friends we spent a 3 day weekend in the Duyfken boatshed creating beautiful instruments to bring home and play. Starting with a slab of raw tree, after many hours of chiselling, sanding, carving, oiling and waxing, the novice woodworkers were ready to drill the holes to insert the pegs, and put the 12 strings into place ready for tuning. The tuning itself was made extremely easy by the use of the latest electronic gadgets, and at last we were ready to play!
Being in the pentatonic scale, these "Dream harps" are more suitable for just strumming by non-musicians than for picking out traditional tunes. The harps are held at right angles to the body, crossing the heart, so the vibrations create a healing effect as the strings are plucked. Although the making of these harps was quite hard work, when we held them in our hands we all knew it was well worth it!
